(More customer reviews)I bought this item new to help me with a drapery rod project, and was not disappointed. The level comes with batteries, so all I needed to do was install them, read through the instructions and I was ready to go.When installing the batteries for the laser the first time, make sure you pull out the clear plastic tab protruding into the battery compartment - they do not tell you that in the instructions. It's used to immobilize the unit's internals during shipping.
The tool uses a system Ryobi calls AirGrip to attach to smooth wall surfaces.Instead of pins or tape, AirGrip uses a rubber seal and vacuum pump to literally suck itself onto the wall.I used it on drywall and plaster walls with no problem. For rougher surfaces, it comes with a base you can pin to the wall that the level slides into. You can also mount the device on a tripod.
When you attach the level to the wall, you need only get it close to vertical and to the height you require. The lasers are self-leveling, so there is no need for bubbles, and the unit has a height-adjuster so you can fine tune it to the exact position needed. The laser window rotates, so you can precisely position where you want the laser lines.
The unit can also project a vertical line, or both horizontal and verticals simultaneously that intersect. This particular drapery rod was about 140 inches long, and I had no problem using the laser lines to correctly position the brackets with respect to another rod's brackes already on the adjacent wall.I simply aligned the laser line with the screw heads of the bracket, then turned the laser window and projected the line on the wall I was working on. Using the simultaneous projection, I moved the vertical line the required distance from the window frame, then marked my first bracket center on the horizontal line. After that, I just measured off the distances to the center brackets, then used a tape for the final, far end bracket.Instead of taking me 2 hours to correctly position the brackets, I took me only one hour to get this complicated drapery rod up.
Great device for the money, worked as advertised, and has saved me a lot of time over using bubble levels. My only gripes: no indication in the instructions or on the device to remove the plastic shipping tab I found in the batter compartment, so it took me a few minutes to figure out what it was. Also, the case could be a little bigger to accommodate the accessories and the instruction manual as well.
